Note:
This was my second time at the Writing Prompts and Practice with OC Writer's Guild. I was still a bit nervous, but I must say that writing like this was so much fun. The time limit helped me to get focused instead of dilly-dallying like I usually do with my blog writing.
PROMPT IDEAS:
- Republican
- I'm learning all kinds to do when I'm broke
- Ssh... Hear that?
THE COMMERCIAL
[Woman dressing up in front of camera, talking to someone behind the camera.]
"Ok, are we on? In 10?"
"It's about spending right? Kay. I Will do my best. Thanks again for the chance to be in this commercial!"
[Director's voice booming: Action!]
My husband hated me. Well, hate is a strong word. The exact phrase would be he absolutely had no idea on what to do with me and my ideas. Bringing brown bags of lunch to work. Debate over price of meat and other protein food. Share our meal. Almost never dining out. Heaps of vegetables. Take our leftover from restaurant home. Cut down on beers and cigarettes. And rice. Lots and lots of rice.
To say I am broke is misleading. But it is, alas, somewhat true. My husband is financially secured, but from where I come from money was tight and we have to be careful to what we spend. It was not just me, it was my whole country. The old adage is right, I am learning all kinds to do when i am broke. Especially about not wasting food and be smart with what I eat.
Sometimes I feel bad for not "fitting in" in his lifestyle, for being so foreign. sometimes I feel bad because I think I made him look poor. Often I thought about how people talk about us, and my smug pride (or common sense) said: "Ssh... hear that? That's us giving no crap to what they think. We're doing good, girl, we're doing good." And she is right. My frugal methods made my husband healthier than he's ever been, and we have more to spend on fun activities and amazing experiences. Being broke is not so bad after all.
